Driving School in Kattanam: How to Choose the Right One
Published 2026-10-04 · Maria MDS, Kattanam
If you live in Kattanam, Bharanikkavu, Pallickal or Kattachira, you have more driving schools within 7 km than you might expect. Picking the right one decides how quickly you pass, and whether you actually feel safe driving afterwards. This guide covers what to check, what it costs, and how the licence process works for learners in Kattanam.
Which RTO handles Kattanam?
Kattanam comes under the Mavelikkara Sub Regional Transport Office, code KL-31, at the Mini Civil Station in Mavelikkara. That's where your licence file is handled, even though Kayamkulam (KL-29) is closer for many people. A good local school knows the KL-31 test routine: where the ground test happens, what the inspectors look for, and how test days run.
Seven things to check before you join
- 1Is it a registered motor driving school? Ask for the MDS licence number. Only authorised schools can present candidates and provide the training the MVD requires.
- 2Dual-control cars. The instructor should have their own brake and clutch. This is what lets a nervous beginner drive on KP Road in week one.
- 3One-to-one sessions. You learn faster alone in the car than sharing a session with two other learners.
- 4A proper 'H' and '8' practice ground. You should practise on markings that match the test layout, not just in an empty lot.
- 5Real road practice. Ask whether lessons include KP Road traffic, junction turns and narrow village roads, not just quiet stretches.
- 6Paperwork support. Learner's licence application, slot booking and test-day documents should be handled or clearly guided.
- 7Reviews that name instructors. Read the Google reviews. Real ones mention instructors by name and describe specific moments.
How much does a driving course cost in Kattanam?
Fees vary by school and vehicle, but here's what Maria MDS charges in 2026:
| Course | Fee | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Two-Wheeler | ₹2,500 + ₹200/day on '8' ground | Geared bike and scooter, '8' practice, test-day vehicle |
| Four-Wheeler | ₹8,500 | 20 sessions in a dual-control car, 'H' practice, road driving, paperwork |
| Combo (car + bike) | ₹10,000 + ₹200/day on '8' ground | Both licences, tests coordinated together |
On top of school fees, government fees apply. The learner's licence is about ₹150 per vehicle class plus a ₹50 test fee, paid online on the Sarathi Parivahan portal. The driving test and licence card fees are separate. Check current amounts on Sarathi before paying.
How long does it take?
After you pass the learner's licence test, you must wait at least 30 days before the driving test. Most learners finish a car course comfortably inside that window. Your learner's licence is valid for 6 months, so plan to take the test well before it expires.
New in 2026: hazard perception training
Kerala's MVD is adding a computer-based Hazard Perception Test from December 2026, and authorised schools must train learners for it. Ask any school you're considering how they'll prepare you. Read our full guide to the test.
